First I'd seen this (so maybe it is a gameplay innovation) - Lots of replayability, lets you take down the enemies you want in the way you want, and forces you to try new gameplay elementsĬollecting items - I am normally not big into collectathons (Red Dead Redemption 2 started to piss me off when I needed to get rare animals to get a decent satchel) but because the world is so tight, you can just pick things up while you're in the area You can easily outrun them if you just can't be assed to kill them all though.Ĭombat is fluid and forgiving, but challenging enough to be able to get better at it You can't walk down the road without encountering 15 enemies. Story is simple, bad guys are simple, game is simple. It's one of the only games I've played in a while where I don't feel like I need to be in the right "mood" for it SoM on the other hand has a pretty terrible story, no real gameplay innovations (it's 6 years old though, maybe it broke some ground for its time) and was tightly focused on just being a turn-your-brain-off slash-fest. Most of the games I played had a great story, interesting gameplay elements, a interesting settings, beautiful graphics, etc. I've played a lot of games this year and while I have enjoyed games more than I've enjoyed Shadow of Mordor (SoM), I can't say that any of them were more pure fun. ![]()
